Walk Description:

THURSDAY NORDIC WALX WELLBEING:

Big Trees!

A gentle, safe way to walk yourself fitter with fabulous views and great company in our open-air health club!

Our Thursday mornings are spent in gentle walks and exercises that have been specifically designed to be performed outside using poles, bands, Smoveys and the fabulous environment of the New Forest around us such as trees, benches, hills and slopes.

This week we use the techniques that we have been practising to Nordic Walk along the Big Trees route at Rhinefield and the Arboretum.

This circular woodland walk explores the exotic giant redwood trees of Rhinefield Ornamental Drive. The New Forest is well known for its ancient oak, ash and beech woodlands, but in the mid-1800s a forest worker planted an abundance of sequoia redwoods, conifers, azaleas & rhododendrons in the grounds of Rhinefield to create the famous Ornamental Drive that’s still visible today.Although not native trees, the giant redwoods have grown to be the tallest trees in the National Park and are a mightily impressive sight for anyone who explores this wonderful woodland walkway. The walk also visits Blackwater Arboretum, a small clearing where you can relax on wooden benches surrounded by a remarkable selection of trees sourced from all around the world.

PLEASE NOTE:

There are a couple of gates but no stiles. There is a very real possibility of encountering New Forest grazing livestock such as ponies, cows and donkeys. The very nature of the New Forest terrain means that springs pop up in unexpected places after heavy rain so please make sure you wear waterproof footwear (no wellies)! Dogs are welcome but there is quite a stretch of the route that runs fairly close to the road, so depending on the nature of the dog, Fido may need to be on a lead most of the time. Please make sure you have filled out a dog disclaimer form from Janet before bringing your pooch.
