We will join Lou and her Chalke Valley Walkers on this walk where poles are optional. It is graded a little more than a moderate walk with approx. 2 hours walking time.
This lovely walk follows the route through Martin Down Nature Reserve along Brokerley Ditch followed by a climb up to Penbury Knoll Hillfort. We will stop here and have a drink, ( bring and carry your own flask ) whilst enjoying the considerable view right along the Roman Akling Dike.
The nature reserve itself is a glorious 350 hectares of unspoiled chalk downland. It is a flourishing natural space full of flowers, insects, and rare birds nesting and singing. Skylarks abound and Brown Hares are beside us all the way!
The walk will include a mile of fairly gentle hill climb. It may be rutted and rough underfoot. It is exposed at the Hillfort so bring warm layers with you. The return through the valley can be very wet underfoot too! All worth it for a wonderful walk.
Sadly I have to remind you not to leave valuables in your cars.
This is a countryside walk so waterproof comfortable footwear is a must and as always, bring a drink of water with you and dress for the weather!
