Walk Description:

This 9km walk sets off from the Running Horses Pub at the side of the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Lydiate which is close to Maghull, head across the fields where we pick up the Cheshire Line Path, this is the track bed to the Southport/Liverpool Extension of the Cheshire Line railway. Leaving the track bed and walk round the area where Lydiate hall ruins are. We will take a short detour to look at the ruins of St Catherines chapel believed to be from the 15th century, Scotch Piper Inn reputed to be the oldest pub in Lancashire and returning on the Leeds and Liverpool canal.  

Cheshire Line Path is the track bed of the Southport and Cheshire Lines Extension railway it was constructed to link the Cheshire Line Committee Railway at Aintree to Southport, operated from 1884 to 1952. The Cheshire lines path is multi use forming part of the Trans Pennine Trail TPT running from Southport to Hornsea.  

Lydiate Hall was a 16th century hall in Lydiate, the house was a black and white half-timbered house, the house was accompanied by a private chapel. Became a ruin in the early 20th century and is now in a conservation area.  

St Catherines Chapel Lydiate, known locally as Lydiate Abbey was built for the private worship of the Ireland family from 1410, its use as a private chapel probably ceased during the dissolution of the monasteries but a small Cemetry was still in use to the late 19th century.  

Scotch Piper Inn is the oldest pub in Lancashire dates back from 1320. It is cruck framed was originally known as the Royal Oak but according to local legends was renamed in honour of an injured Scottish piper connected to Jacobite Rebellion in the 18th century who visited the Inn.

 

It is essential to register and book in advance online.

 

It is advisable to wear a bum bag with a water bottle or hydration pack. Do bring a high energy snack to have on the hoof or as soon as we finish. Wear comfortable clothing that suitable for the weather. Do wear sturdy grippy shoes.

We respect people`s busy agendas and do like to start promptly. Please arrive 5 minutes early for your class and be ready to start on time.

 

Walk speed guide:

Gentle stroll - Gear 1 - Nice pace that you can do for extended periods. 2-2.5mph (these generally are our Wellness walks)   Easy walk - Gear 2 - Faster pace gained through technique. Expect Gear 2 at times throughout the walk with occasional photo stops. 2.5mph (Most of our 1-hour Explorer walks)   Moderate walk - Gear 2/3 - Faster again using technique and with less recovery. Very little stopping. 2.5mph-3mph+ (these are generally Total Body Walx, but also explore this pace on our Explorer and Adventure walks)   Strenuous walk - gear 3/4  (these are generally Total Body Walx, but also explore this pace on our Explorer and Adventure walks).
