# Why Do My Walking Poles Vibrate?

## **Understanding Technique vs Equipment**

#### **Introduction**

Occasionally people contact us saying their walking pole “vibrates” when it touches the ground.

In most cases, this turns out **not to be a fault with the pole itself**, but simply the way the pole is striking the ground during the walking stride.

Understanding the difference between **true mechanical vibration** and the impact feeling created by pole strike helps clarify what is really happening.

#### **1. Why Quality Walking Poles Do Not Vibrate**

WALX® poles are manufactured from **high-grade 7075 aluminium alloy**, a material commonly used in aerospace and high-performance sporting equipment.

This alloy offers:

- excellent strength-to-weight ratio
- high durability
- efficient energy transfer through the pole

Each section of the pole is **precision-machined to extremely tight tolerances**, often within microns, so that the joints between sections fit securely and smoothly.

Because of this:

• the pole sections cannot move against each other when correctly assembled

• the joints lock firmly and transfer energy efficiently

• vibration from the pole construction itself is extremely unlikely

If a pole were genuinely vibrating due to construction, it would normally indicate a loose or damaged component.

This is extremely rare with well-manufactured poles.

#### **2. When a Pole Can Rattle**

A true mechanical rattle sounds different from the impact sensation many people describe as vibration.

A genuine rattle may occur if:

- a handle insert becomes loose
- an internal component shifts
- a locking system has not been tightened fully

Historically, some walking pole brands have experienced issues where **handle components were not fully secured**, allowing a slight movement inside the shaft.

In these situations the sound is clearly mechanical — a distinct rattle — rather than the feedback felt through the pole when walking.

If this occurs, the pole should simply be checked or replaced.

#### **3. The Most Common Cause: Pole Strike**

What many walkers describe as “vibration” is actually **impact from striking the pole firmly into the ground**.

This often happens when someone has previously learned traditional Nordic Walking technique where:

- the pole is planted quite firmly
- the strap absorbs part of the force

When walkers transition to **strapless ergonomic poles**, the movement changes.

With the **WALX Tri-Motion™ method**, the pole should:

- be placed lightly on the ground
- move smoothly through the stride
- provide propulsion rather than impact

When the movement is correct, pole contact feels **quiet, smooth and controlled**.

#### **Why Good Technique Feels Quiet**

When pole walking technique is efficient, the pole contact with the ground is gentle and controlled.

Many experienced walkers describe the movement as:

- smooth
- flowing
- almost silent

If the pole is being driven heavily into the ground, the movement is usually coming from the arm rather than flowing naturally from the shoulder and stride.

The goal is **rhythm and propulsion — not impact**.

#### **4. A Simple Way to Check**

#### If you feel vibration in one pole, a quick test can help determine whether the cause is mechanical or technique related.

Try this simple check:

1. Swap the **lower pole sections** from left to right.
2. Walk again and see whether the sensation moves with the pole section.

If the feeling stays on the same side of your body, it is almost always related to movement technique.

If it moves with the pole section, the pole itself may need checking.

#### **The Key Takeaway**

With a properly manufactured walking pole made from **7075 alloy and precision-machined sections**, true vibration caused by the pole itself is extremely unlikely.

In most cases, the sensation people describe as vibration simply comes from **how the pole contacts the ground during the stride**.

Refining the movement so the pole is placed smoothly and pushed through the stride usually resolves the issue.

This is exactly what the **WALX Tri-Motion™ technique** is designed to achieve.
