At WALX HQ we always set up a MISSION CHRISTMAS drop off point in conjunction with our favourite local radio station WAVE 105 . They run a fantastic annual appeal as part of their Cash for Kids charity where they ask people to buy an extra pressie that can be distributed to disadvantaged Kids in the South
We initially donated as a staff thing but last year we asked some of our local walkers from WALX Dorset if they could help too. We were so delighted by their response that in 2019 we made a lot more noise and we have been literally astounded at the generosity and thoughtfulness shown by our lovely regulars. A quick look in the donations box revealed beautifully hand picked craft boxes, books and toys for all ages including teens who the charity were concerned about.
Added to that, the fact we became an official drop off point for the charity meant that the good people of Purbeck also began popping in with gifts. Our hearts melted when children in school uniforms came in specially to donate, including the delightful Phoebe who proudly gave two presents for children less fortunate than herself.
It’s been great to be handed gifts whilst meeting up for walks and the WALX Dorset Christmas party was like Christmas Day as people arrived with a variety of gifts. In all it has been a really positive experience at a time of doom & gloom due to brexit and constant rain – We think it proves that most people are lovely and walkers are even lovelier!
When the time came to bag up the pressies we struggled to get them into the Santa sack we bought specially but Albert the office dog gave us a helping paw and we managed to get all the gifts to the WAVE 105 depot for wrapping and distribution – we were delighted to hear that over 60,000 gifts in total were collected this year. We have already started collecting items for next year!
