Loneliness

When I ask members of WALX Coast and Country what they enjoy about being a member, the common response is ‘they really enjoy the social aspect’. It is just as important as the exercise. Having a social element is important to mental health.

The definition of loneliness is…

Loneliness is a perceived mismatch between the quality or quantity of social connections that a person has and what they would like to have.

You do not have to be alone to feel lonely. If you do not feel connected or appreciated by the people around you, it is easy to feel lonely. Occasionally, it can be nice to take time out and enjoy our own company, but that is something we choose rather than being forced on us.

Being part of a group or club gives us control of when we want to spend time with others. Having a common interest helps with social interaction. The great thing about outdoor activity is we are facing the same elements as everyone around us, giving an additional connection.

The different types of loneliness are…

  • Emotional loneliness- When someone you were very close with is no longer there. This could be a partner or a close friend.
  • Social loneliness- When you feel like you’re lacking a wider social network of friends, neighbours, or colleagues.
  • Transient loneliness- A feeling that comes and goes.
  • Situational loneliness- Loneliness which you only feel at certain times like Sundays, bank holidays or Christmas.
  • Chronic loneliness- When you feel lonely all or most of the time.

Most of us will experience loneliness at some time. It can often feel more intense around Valentine’s Day. The adverts on the television and radio requests can highlight for some, they are feeling alone.

So, if you are craving some fun company and social interaction, book a walk to remind you, there are lots of lovely people around who do care and appreciate you. On the other hand, if you know someone who is at risk of feeling lonely, make an extra effort around Valentines and get them out on a walk, or simply go for coffee and a chat. Little actions make a big difference.
