There are currently around 700 million people over the age of 60. In August I added to the list. It is predicted that by 2050, this figure will have risen to 2 billion.

I remember when I was younger, I once described my mum as being old; she was 33 at the time.

At one time being 60 was classed as old but nowadays that does not seem to be the case. I have just returned from the WALX Purbeck Festival; the average age was clearly over 60 but that did not affect the energy or vitality of the weekend.

Some of the participants will have walked 30 miles + over the 3 days on hilly terrains. They will not have specifically trained for the weekend as their regular walking has given them an exceptional baseline fitness. They participate in regular walks on a weekly basis all over the country.

There was a time when hitting retirement age meant slowing down and taking it easy. Some people dread retirement as they fear boredom or a feeling of not being of use anymore. But often now people embrace the idea of retiring. It is a time for new beginnings.

Lots of pensioners volunteer in their local communities for charities and clubs etc. WALX Coast and Country would not be able to function if it was not for our amazing Walk Leaders.

WALX Coast and Country acknowledge Older Adult Day as a day to celebrate being older and wiser. It is a time to ensure we do not slow down and enjoy being active.

Being healthy in old age is important as it reduces the signs and symptoms of aging. There is less chance we will suffer from chronic health conditions and our mental health is less likely to suffer.

WALX Coast and Country have a full programme of activities for all abilities and fitness levels. Wellness sessions include gentle walking sessions as well as some exercises to improve mobility, balance and coordination.

One of the most important aspects of our club is the social side of what we do. Lots of friendships have been made and we always welcome new people.
