From Dorset to the Jungle: A Trekker’s Tale with WALX Poles

We receive many enquiries from customers eager to use our Total Body Walking Poles as part of their training for a personal challenge. These challenges vary from walking 100 miles in a month, to completing the Country Walking Magazine 1000 miles in a year, or tackling trails such as the South West Coastal Path or the Camino Way.
One such walker, Anita Rose from Poole, approached us at the start of the year—and this is her story:
“WALX Poles took me from 0 to 100km in 3 weeks—plus from sea level to 2200m!”

In January, I rashly signed up for a “challenging” trek across Costa Rica—with absolutely no trekking experience. With only three weeks to go, I found WALX and began Total Body WALX workouts at Durlston Country Park.

I completed the Power of Poles initiation (thank goodness!) and, for extra motivation, created a JustGiving page to raise funds for MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians)—and to stop myself backing out.
On February 22nd, I was off!

My mentor was a school classmate from Woking Girls’ Grammar (Class of ’75!). Gill (I’d always known her as Batty), her friend Cynthia, and I—all in the latter half of our sixties—were joined by our group leader (24), James (also 24 and fresh out of the army), and Lydia (30), very fit, tall, and long-legged. Together, we set out on the Costa Rica Camino and headed into the jungle.

Apparently, Gill, Cynthia, and I were the same age as our leader Joshua’s grandma—which, he said, made him very proud of us!

I can’t say it wasn’t gruelling, but Costa Rica is such a spectacular place. The incredible birds, wildlife, lush trees and jungle vines, plus the breath-taking views and waterfalls, distracted me from the blisters and bruises. We spent a week walking through the jungle, from the Caribbean to the Pacific Coast—climbing above the clouds in some sections.

When we finally arrived at Quepos on the Pacific Coast, it felt absolutely fantastic.

I know that without WALX Poles and the training sessions, I would’ve struggled so much more.

So if you are training for a challenge or thinking about joining then get in touch and find out how we can help you reach your fitness goal.
