You don’t have to travel far to feel the difference

There’s a point when I drive out of Chesterfield towards the Peak District where I can almost feel something change. The roads become greener, the hills appear and my body seems to know before my brain does — my shoulders drop and I start to relax.

Once I’m walking, that feeling grows. My mind becomes quieter, I feel more settled and, for a while, the rest of the world melts into the background. I notice the view, the weather, the sounds around me and, somehow, there’s more space to simply be.

Anyone who knows me knows I love travelling. I’ll happily head halfway around the world to walk across the Bolivian salt flats or explore the national parks of Brazil. Give me a rucksack, walking shoes and somewhere new to discover and I’m very happy! But I also know I don’t need to travel thousands of miles to experience that feeling.

Some of my happiest moments outdoors are much closer to home — walking, chatting, noticing the changing seasons and sharing the experience with other people. There’s something about walking alongside someone that makes conversation flow a little more easily too. You can talk, laugh, be quiet for a while and simply enjoy where you are.

And that’s something I really want to bring to WALX Harborough.

Yes, our walks are about movement and using our bodies. But they’re also about getting outside, connecting with others and having an hour where life can feel a little less busy. I want our walks to be somewhere you can arrive exactly as you are, enjoy being part of the group and head home glad that you came.

Because we don’t always need a spectacular landscape or a far-flung adventure.

Sometimes, a local path, a little bit of green space and good company are adventure enough.
