“Step by step, we walk the path
For fitness, fun, and lively chat
With friends we stroll, in sun or rain
Our spirits lifted, we feel no pain
Together moving, side by side
In motion, we share, our worlds collide
Through fields and forests, cities wide
We walk for health, with joy and pride
So let’s lace up our shoes and hit the street
For walking brings us a world of treats
To sweat, to laugh, to connect with glee
Walking for fitness, fun, and sociality.”
There is a strong association between walking and poetry, as evidenced by the phrase Solvitur ambulando, which means ‘it is solved by walking’.
Arthur Hugh Clough, a Victorian poet, used this phrase as the epigraph for his epistolary poem Amours de Voyage.
Noel Coward was once quoted as saying, ‘I like long walks, especially when they’re taken by people I dislike.’
My little ditty highlights this long-standing and deep-rooted relationship between walking and poetry. Do you need inspiration for fitness, motivation and writing?
