What is Nordic Walking?
A Complete Beginner's Guide for Anyone Who Wants to Enjoy Walking Again

You don't have to be fit to start. You just have to be willing to take the first step.

Perhaps this sounds familiar...

You've been meaning to become a little more active for a while.

You know walking is good for you, but somehow life gets in the way. Maybe you've tried walking on your own, only to find your enthusiasm fades after a few weeks. Perhaps you've seen people walking with poles and wondered what they were doing, but felt it probably wasn't for someone like you.

If you're honest, you might also be wondering...

"Am I fit enough?"

"Would I slow everyone down?"

"Is it all a bit too sporty for me?"

If that's how you're feeling, you're not alone.

In fact, we've lost count of the number of people who've arrived at their first session saying exactly the same thing.

A few weeks later, they're walking confidently, chatting with new friends and wondering why they didn't try it sooner.

This guide is for you.

Before we explain Nordic Walking...

Let's start with something more important.

You're probably not searching for Nordic Walking because you want to learn a new technique.

You're searching because you'd like to feel better.

Perhaps you'd like more energy.

Perhaps you'd like to improve your fitness without joining a gym.

Perhaps you'd like to spend more time outdoors.

Or perhaps you'd simply enjoy having friendly people to walk with each week.

Those are the reasons most people join us.

Nordic Walking simply happens to be one of the nicest ways we've found of helping people achieve those things.

So... what is Nordic Walking?

At its simplest, Nordic Walking is walking using specially designed poles.

But that's only part of the story.

Unlike trekking poles, which are mainly used for support, Nordic Walking poles are used with a simple technique that encourages your whole body to move naturally as you walk.

Your arms begin to work with your legs.

Your posture often improves.

Walking develops a comfortable rhythm.

Many people tell us they feel more upright, more balanced and more purposeful after just a short time.

The important thing is this.

Nordic Walking doesn't make walking more complicated.

It simply helps you get more from every step.

"I'm not very fit..."

We've heard that sentence hundreds of times.

And almost every time it ends the same way.

A few weeks later the same person is happily chatting while walking with the group, wondering what they were worried about.

You don't need to become fit before trying Nordic Walking.

Many people join because they want to become fitter.

That's an important difference.

At Walx White Peak we don't expect anyone to arrive feeling confident.

We simply help people discover that they can do far more than they imagined.

One comfortable walk at a time.

Why do people enjoy it so much?

This might surprise you.

When people first enquire about Nordic Walking they usually ask about fitness.

When they've been coming for a few months, they rarely mention fitness first.

Instead they tell us things like:

"I've met some lovely people."

"It's the highlight of my week."

"I've discovered places I never knew existed."

"I feel so much more confident."

"I can't believe how much better I feel."

Exercise certainly improves health.

But enjoyment is what keeps us coming back.

And when we keep coming back, something wonderful happens.

Without really noticing it, we become stronger.

We become more confident.

We move more easily.

We spend more time outdoors.

We build friendships.

At Walx White Peak we believe lasting change doesn't come from working harder for a few weeks.

It comes from finding something you genuinely enjoy doing for years.

Why use poles?

It's another question we hear regularly.

"If I can already walk, why would I need poles?"

The answer is surprisingly simple.

The poles help involve your upper body as well as your legs.

Instead of all the work happening below your waist, your whole body begins working together in a natural, flowing movement.

Many people notice they stand taller.

Some feel more stable.

Others simply enjoy the rhythm the poles create.

Once you've learned the technique, the poles soon stop feeling like something you're carrying.

They become part of the walk itself.

Learning properly makes all the difference

Like any new skill, Nordic Walking is much easier when someone shows you how.

That's why everyone joining our regular Nordic Walking walks begins with our Power of Poles session.

Think of it as a friendly introduction rather than a lesson.

We'll show you how the poles work.

You'll learn the basic technique.

You'll meet other beginners.

You'll discover that using the poles feels much more natural than you expected.

Most importantly, you'll leave feeling confident about joining regular walks.

Power of Poles isn't a test.

Nobody passes or fails.

It's simply the best way we know of helping everyone begin with confidence.

More than exercise

People sometimes imagine that our walks are all about fitness.

They aren't.

Of course you'll be active.

Of course you'll improve.

But that's only part of the experience.

What many people value just as much are the conversations.

The laughter.

The changing seasons.

The sense of belonging.

The coffee afterwards.

The familiar faces that gradually become friends.

Those things matter.

In fact, we think they're one of the reasons people keep coming back.

The Walx White Peak Way

We deliberately keep our groups small.

Not because we couldn't make them bigger.

Because we don't want to.

Smaller groups mean we get to know everyone personally.

Nobody disappears into a crowd.

Nobody feels left behind.

Everyone receives encouragement.

Everyone belongs.

We also believe health is built through consistency rather than intensity.

You don't have to walk the furthest.

You don't have to walk the fastest.

You simply need to enjoy walking enough that you want to come again next week.

That's where the real benefits begin.

Is Nordic Walking right for you?

Only you can answer that question.

But if you're looking for...
  • an enjoyable way to become more active
  • friendly people to walk with
  • beautiful countryside to explore
  • gentle encouragement rather than pressure
  • an activity that can become part of your life for many years
...then we'd love to welcome you.

Your first step

If you've never tried Nordic Walking before, our Power of Poles session is the perfect place to begin.

There is no expectation that you'll already know what you're doing.

That's exactly why the session exists.

We'll provide the poles.

We'll teach you the basics.

We'll answer your questions.

And, perhaps most importantly, we'll help you feel comfortable from the moment you arrive.

Everyone was a beginner once.

We simply help you take that first step.

We'd love to meet you

One of our favourite moments is welcoming someone who arrives a little nervous.

Then watching them leave smiling.

Not because they've mastered Nordic Walking.

But because they've realised they can do it.

If you're curious about Nordic Walking, we'd be delighted to help you discover whether it's right for you.

Who knows?

A year from now, you might be the one reassuring someone else who's wondering whether they should give it a try.

And that's how many of the best journeys begin.

One step at a time.
