When Anthony Hayes from GLL (Greenwich Leisure Ltd.) got in touch, he had a very clear brief. He wanted an affordable, sustainable programme that could be rolled out across the City of Cardiff. He is responsible for the delivery of a range of programmes in the City under the brand BETTER and had a team of motivated staff based in the 4 Leisure Centres they manage. He also wanted to include two members of the NHS who are delivering the ‘Escape Pain’ programme – exercise targeting over 60s with either back pain, or hip or knee pain, with the aim of managing waiting lists for medical treatment and possibly eliminating the need for medical intervention. That’s the organisational aim – for participants it is about encouraging more exercise, reducing pain and increasing confidence in a population struck particularly hard by being locked down through COVID.
Anthony wanted to be able to deliver a joined up community programme in the City Parks using this team and potentially building a network of leaders in order to expand the programme longer term.
They did not need the WALX software as they wanted to use the BETTER booking systems and APP. The aim was to engage with Adults initially with a focus on the 60 plus and those who were inactive or isolated
We designed a bespoke course based around the use of strapped nordic walking poles with all initial tuition being delivered by those with a min level 2 fitness qualification. To help with sustainability we can provide on line ‘top up’ training via our community WALX courses, should a staff member move on.
