Walk Description:

Join us for 2025 exploring the coast of the magnificent Morecambe Bay in 15 walks throughout the year.

Until 250 years ago Morecambe Bay wasn't mentioned on the maps, instead being referred to as Lancaster or Leven sands. 2nd largest bay in the Uk, largest continous area of intertidal mud and sandflaps in the uk. Spring tidal range of 9m. Special protection area from Rossal point to past Barrow

Join us for the penultimate walk  exploring this wonderful bay. 7 miles

Catch the bus from Barrow to Rampside where we will start from, before walking past Foulney Island onto Roa Island, then back down the causeway along the cycle path which was the old railway line into Barrow. Lovely views as we pass.

From the end of the cycle way which takes us round Salthouse Pool will pass through Barrow to have a look at the Victorian Park,  A short walk from the train station at the start to catch the bus.

Roa Island – until 1847 Roa island was a true island being accessible by boat or foot across the sands at low tide. A london banker bought the island in1840 a built a causeway to the island where steamers sailed to Fleetwood.

Foulney island – low lying grass and shingle. Connected to the mainland via a shingle and rock causeway which was built in Victorian times as a tidal protection measure. Is a bird sanctuary

Piel Island – location of Piel castle built by the monks of Furness Abbey in the fourteenth century.

Barrow park – designed by Thomas Mawson in 1908, we have already seen some of his designs. Laid out over 2 decades and is now designated a grade 2 listed

Rampside Hall – grade 1, most noted for its 12 chimneys, which have been given the nickname of the 12 apostles.

Rampside Leading light – 66ft tall, navigation beacon, built in 1875, only surviving one out of 13 that was built during the late 19th century to aid vessels into the towns port. Grade 2 building.
