Walk Description:

Join us for a 10.5 km walk around Poynton and Middlewood using the industrial past as our route. During its heyday there where over 70 pits on the Vernon estate

We will explore the Middlewood way, an old railway track bed now a footpath and cycle way, the Macclesfield canal and a couple of gentle coal inclines.

This is the next walk on the exploration of the GM ringway as we head round the boroughs of Greater Manchester.

Poynton – the first mention of the mayor of Poynton was in 1289. Coal was mined here from the 16th Century and the collieries under the ownership of the Lord Vernon from 1832 until their closure in 1935. In the late 18th century, the Pickford family developed the family business of waggoners on the London to Manchester route. The business thrived and they relocated to London, now one of the best-known removal firms.

Middlewood Way – an 11-mile shared use path between Macclesfield and Marple. Follows the route of the former Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple railway which operated between 1869 and 1970. The railway played a significant part in transporting goods particularly cotton and coal.

Macclesfield canal – canal opened in 1831 26.1 miles long. All 12 locks are at Bosley. The canal runs from a junction on the Peak Forest at Marple to the Trent and Mersey canal.

Princes Incline – longest of 2 inclines, was originally rope worked and converted to locomotive in 1889. They are now lovely straight good walking paths through woods and countryside.
