Walk Description:
We’ll kick start our senses (and our body) with a warm up in the shelter of the road bridge before entering Torrington Common via the main road. We will follow Alexander’s path up to the Old Bowling Green where we will identify trees 54,55,1 & 2 before following the main track (Roman Road) heading downhill, alongside and around the cemetery wall, before crossing the field and descending the steps to the babbling common lake stream identifying another 16 trees along the way. On crossing the stream we head up to and turn left along the Barmaids path until we reach the steps that take us up to the Coronation (jubilee) path along which we will identify a further 9 trees (some adjacent to the allotments) before once again joining the Roman Road which we follow uphill to the next track junction. Here we will descend the very steep pathway towards Reeds field identifying tree No 30 before joining the Rice Point Path at the crossroads which we follow uphill towards the golf course. Along the way we have the opportunity to observe at first hand nature at its best while taking in the sights and sounds of the birds/squirrels and other wildlife going about their business. Just prior to the summit/golf course we once again follow the extremely steep pathway down to the edge of Reeds field (identifying a further 7 trees during the descent) to the junction with the Rolle Canal along which we must continue in search of trees 38/39. Once identified we retrace our steps to the kissing gate and enter Reeds field walking alongside the Tarka trail in order to identify the next 4 trees prior to skirting the natural pond full of water lilies and frogbit plants identify 3 more trees in the immediate vicinity. We have very nearly completed our adventure just a few more trees to find. We continue to follow the well-trodden pathway across Reeds field where we identify trees 50/51 just prior to the hard track leading down to the stream and the final path (Centenary) which leads back to the Puffing Billy (and trees 52/53) where we will complete our cooldown and enjoy some well-deserved light refreshments.
