Walk Description:

This gentle two-hour walk explores the unique landscape surrounding Bennerley Viaduct, one of the world’s last surviving wrought-iron railway viaducts. The route combines peaceful stretches along the Erewash Canal with riverside paths and open countryside, offering both close-up encounters with the viaduct’s soaring ironwork and wider views across the valley. Along the way, you may spot herons, kingfishers, and seasonal wildflowers, making this a rewarding walk for both history lovers and nature enthusiasts. The terrain is mostly flat but can be muddy after rain, so good walking shoes are recommended. After completing the circuit, relax at the new café nearby for refreshments and the chance to reflect on the remarkable heritage of this “iron giant” and its surrounding landscape.

Please note if the visitors centre is not completed by this time, I'll put this walk on another date and add an alternative one. It is due to open in October 2025.
