Walk Description:
This River Source Walk explores the beginnings of the River Lathkill, one of the Peak District’s most beautiful limestone rivers. Starting in the serene Lathkill Dale, the route meanders through a landscape shaped by both water and industry. In quieter months, the river reveals its changing character: sometimes a lively stream, sometimes vanishing into the porous limestone before reappearing further along. The walk passes through areas once worked for lead, with old mine shafts, aqueducts, and ruined buildings offering glimpses into the dale’s industrial past. Nature has since reclaimed much of the valley, creating a striking contrast of rugged limestone cliffs, wooded slopes, and clear flowing water. At the head of the dale, walkers reach the river’s source often a trickle in drier weather, sometimes a gushing spring after rain. Standing here, it is easy to appreciate the delicate balance between geology, water, and life that makes this river and its valley so special. This walk offers a rich mix of history, ecology, and scenic beauty. Whether you linger to enjoy the wildlife, explore the mining heritage, or simply follow the river’s course, the River Lathkill walk is a rewarding journey into one of the Peak District’s most enchanting valleys. If conditions are not suitable, Sam will alter the walk accordingly.
