Walk Description:
Come and join us on the 9km walk in 2 stages, visit the 900-year-old Priory, where for the first 400m years monks ran the first official ferry service across the River Mersey, the first 200 being for free.
Climb the 101 steps to the top of St Marys tower for amazing views across the river.
Take in an impressive Georgian square. With more grade 1 houses outside of London one of them being William Laird who founded Cammel Laird in 1828.
Catch the train to Birkenhead Park, which was the idea for Great Central Park in NY and then from here walk up Bidston Hill to see the windmill, observatory and lighthouse and great views over Liverpool again. From here catch the train from Bidston home or back to Birkenhead where the cars are.
There are several options for you: 1. just do the Priory, tower and Square that's around 1 mile, 2: previous and Birkenhead Park, 3: all the walk.
Birkenhead Priory – was founded about 1150. In 1318 the monks from the priory were granted ferry rights by Edward 11. This allowed them to build a house to store their corn and for travellers to rest. St Marys tower – was the first parish church in Birkenhead.
Cammell Laird – the Company was founded by William laird who established the Birkenhead in works in 1824. He was joined by his son in 1828 their first ship was an iron barge.
Hamilton square – Georgian square has the most grade 1 buildings outside of london. It is named after the wife of the Ship builder William Laird
Birkenhead Park – 140 acres, was marshy grazing land before it became a municipal park, plots of land on the edge were sold off to finance its construction.
