Walk Description:
This challenging and varied circuit takes us deep into the wild landscape of the Dark Peak within Peak District National Park, combining rich history with expansive upland scenery. Starting from Hayfield, we follow gentle riverside paths alongside the River Kinder, easing us into the day as we approach the old gritstone quarry where the Kinder Trespass of 1932 began, a pivotal moment in the history of public access to the hills. Leaving the river behind, the route joins the Pennine Way, climbing gradually through open meadows before reaching the windswept Edale Cross, an ancient marker that once stood at a crossroads in the Forest of the Peak. From here the landscape opens out and the climb becomes steeper, though always on clear, well-defined paths. Reaching the vast Kinder Scout plateau and its summit cairn feels like a real achievement. With luck, the views stretch far across the Peaks, and the sense of space is unmistakable. We then enjoy a superb high-level walk along the plateau rim, weaving between sculpted gritstone outcrops and peat hags, with plenty of sheltered spots to pause for food. Even on fine days, this is a place where the wind can bite, so a warm layer and a thermos are always welcome. One of the highlights comes as we pass Kinder Downfall, the tallest waterfall in the Peak District, plunging around 30 metres from the plateau edge. From here we descend via the dramatic cleft of Williams Clough, following the water down past the reservoir and completing the circuit back into Hayfield. A demanding but deeply satisfying walk through one of the Peak District’s most iconic landscapes.
