Walk Description:
Join us on this 8km walk where we walk to St Mary-le-Ghyll church, where originally if only for a short time a monastery stood. Wend our way along to the Leeds and Liverpool canal where we walk past the Greenberfield locks which is the highest point of the canal. Good spot for lunch then heading back into Barnoldswick passing one of the Rolls Royce factories that have been in the town since 1943.
St Mary-le-Ghyll – was founded by monks from fountains abbey in 1160, the church you see now replaced that original church in around 1524. Before this, monks arrived to build an abbey, but they didnt stay long destroyed it and went to build Kirkstall Abbey.
Greenberfield Locks – 3 locks at the highest point on the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Originally, they were a 3 rise but in 1820 were adapted to 3 single locks.
Rolls Royce – came to Barnoldswick in 1943 when they purchased Banksfield shed a former cotton weaving shed. In the second world war developed the Whittle jet engine. Manufactured the oldest running jet engine in the world and many Rolls Royce jet engines start with the initials RB – Rolls Barnoldswick.
