Walk Description:
Yarmouth to Freshwater Bay Circular Walk – 7 Miles (Cross-Island Route)
Join us for a scenic 7-mile circular walk across the Isle of Wight, travelling from the harbour town of Yarmouth to the dramatic coastline at Freshwater Bay and returning by a different route. This enjoyable walk takes us from one side of the island to the other, offering varied landscapes, coastal views and peaceful countryside.
The route follows mainly good footpaths, with a few short sections along country roads and brief stretches beside A roads (on pavements). Parts of the walk follow the River Yar, where low-lying ground means the path can sometimes be wet or boggy, particularly after rain.
Historically, the River Yar once split the Isle of Wight in half, and the surrounding marshlands are rich in wildlife. Along the way we will enjoy fantastic views across both coastlines, open countryside, and the peaceful Yar estuary.
At the halfway point we reach Freshwater Bay, where there is a café if you would like to grab a drink or snack. The walk includes a few gentle inclines, but overall it is mainly steady, relaxed walking. After we return to Yarmouth, there will be time to enjoy the town, where there are several cafés and places to eat, before we catch the 17:05 ferry back to Lymington. We will meet at the foot passenger ferry terminal in Lymington. Please make sure you have purchased your return ferry ticket to the Isle of Wight in advance.https://www.wightlink.co.uk/book
We will take the 10:00am ferry, which takes approximately 40 minutes to cross the Solent to Yarmouth. Our return ferry is at 17:05, giving us plenty of time to complete the walk and relax in Yarmouth afterwards. Ferry costs are approx £21.50 return. If you want to come by train there is a SWR train that arrives at 09:20 and a return train at 17:59.
