Walk Description:

Join us for this 9.3km walk from Burscough railway station across fields to catch a glimpse of the two columns which is the only evidence left of Burscough Priory.

After this we will see two medieval wayside crosses, historians think these crosses were where mourners could stop and pray ‘for the soul of the departed’, as these crosses seemed to be on medieval roadways. Crossing more fields as we go.

Returning into Burscough village by the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Cafe nearly at end of walk if needed.

Burscough Priory - was an Augustinian foundation, established around 1190 and dissolved around 1536. Following the dissolution 8 bells where removed to Ormskirk parish church where a tower had to be built especially. Just 2 pillars remaining and are in private grounds.

Wayside crosses - often used as wayside markers, erected usually in the 9th to 15th century.

Rufford branch - completed in 1781 linking the Leeds and Liverpool canal to the River Douglas at Tarleton. Was used primarily for transporting coal, timber and agricultural goods and was an important transportation link for the Lancashire and West Riding coalfields
