Walk Description:

Join us for 9km walk through the Devonshire estate at Bolton Abbey in beautiful Wharfedale.

We will follow the river Wharfe up to the famous strid waterfall, crossing at Barden aqueduct, continuing through the ancient Strid wood as we follow the river back down to the Abbey and Priory.

Choose how you will cross the river either by stepping stones or bridge before we spend time having a look around the priory. Time for refreshments and relaxing by the river if you wish.

Bolton priory and Abbey – Bolton abbey is the ruins of an Augustinian Priory. The land was gifted to the Augustinian canons by Alice de Romille of Skipton castle in 1154. The canons lived and worshipped here till 1539. When the priory was dissolved in 1539 permission was granted for the parish to continue worshipping in the nave, which is now the Priory church.

Strid - this is a pinch point in the river Wharfe where the rocks are almost close enough to ‘stride’ across. Because of the force of water and the caverns underneath, formed by the wearing of softer rock by circular motion of small stones in hollows, has been measured at a depth of 65 ft. Hence why it is known as a dangerous stretch of water.

Barden aqueduct – the large turreted bridge with castellations hide the pipe that carries water from the reservoirs at the top of Nidderdale to the cities of West Yorkshire Devonshire estate. - after the Romille line had died out around 1310 and Edward II granted estates to Robert Clifford, whose descendants married into the Cavendish family, the future Dukes of Devonshire. The estate is now in trust for the Chatsworth Settlement Trustees to steward.
