Walk Description:

JJoin us for a lovely seaside 8km walk across the sands of Liverpool Bay from West Kirby to the small archipelago of 3 islands which are the Hilbre islands.

The first island and the smallest is called ‘little eye’, where you will see the sandstone that is very evident in all 3 islands. Moving onto the other bigger islands, you will see what a valuable nature reserve it is and at the main island called Hilbre, will see the telegraph and lifeboat stations.

The name is thought to derive from a chapel built on the island and dedicated to St Hildeburgh. Time to sit and relax, watch the sea birds and if lucky see the seal colony.

Hilbre – in about 1080 a cell and church for Benedictine Monks was established on Hilbre islands as a dependency of Chester Cathedral. The islands became a common place for pilgrimage in the 13th and 14th centuries. At the dissolution of the monasteries two monks were allowed to remain there as they maintained a beacon fro shipping in the river mouth. The last monk left there in about 1550 as they were no longer considered a sanctuary
