Walk Description:
Join us for an 8.5km walk in 2 parts.
Small ferry across to Piel island near Barrow in Furness. Piel castle was built as a fortress by the Monks of Furness Abbey against the Pirates and Scots raiders.
Once we have arrived by the ferry, a walk around the small island, which will be around 1 mile, looking at the pub, pilot houses and castle, enjoy a packed lunch looking over the bay, when ready catching the ferry back over and then walk to Roose railway station using the coastal path we used before when walking to Barrow in Furness.
Pilot Houses - Trinity house Pilot houses, terrace of 8 cottages, originally built in 1875 for the Duke of Buccleuch. Used to accommodate harbour pilots and customs inspectors.
Ship Inn - said to be over 300 years old, uncorroborated believed to have been developed out of a former ships chanderlry, established in the 17th century.
Piel Castle - 14th century fortress built by John Cockerham the abbot of neighbouring Furness abbey, was intended to oversee the trade through the local harbour and to protect against Scottish raids. Was built using stone from the beach. Had fallen into ruin by 1534 and passed into the hands of the crown.
