Walk Description:

I have put two popular routes together to create a long flat walk with lovely river views.

Starting from Canford Park Sang which opened in 2019, we walk beside the river before branching off on a path over to Canford village. This takes us past AFC Bournemouth football training ground. The path takes us over Canford golf course and through the school grounds.

Arriving in Canford village we make our way through to the river. From here to Lady Wimborne bridge passing some interesting history boards on the way. This took trains over the main driveway to Canford House. The last train was in 1964 but freight still used the line until 1977.

The bridge has some of the most ornate carvings of any railway bridge in the country but is sadly deteriorating.

There are some steep steps beside this bridge to get over to the new walkway (if it opens in time!) Very steep steps down.

Then back beside the river until we arrive at the village where there is a good view of Canford Magna private school. It's church has parts that are 1,000 years old. Dark local stone was used.

Returning on the linear stretch of the route back to Canford Sang for the last loop of our walk, where there is a coffee van and seating so we can stop for refreshments. Feel free to bring your own snacks. After we can return to the cars past the lake.

There are no toilets but on the main road is Canford Magna garden centre with toilets towards the back of the store.

As you turn in from the main road traffic lights turn sharp left through some barriers onto a small lane with speed humps.

There are two carparks, we meet in the lower one near the dogwash. The area may still be busy with dogwalkers so allow time to drive back up to the top carpark.

You will be on grassy paths or stoney gravel. Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water as the route is exposed. There is shade in two woodland areas.

The sang is a good area for birds and otters have been sighted.

Location Notes:

Large free parking area at the end of a gated road with a height restriction which used to lead to Canford Magna Golf Course. Gates open between dawn and dusk. Meet in the main car park on the right
