Walk Description:
Join us for a 9.5km walk to enable you to have a look at Furness Abbey where we missed out last time.
To make the walk slightly different we will walk from Roose railway station along Mill Beck and approach the Abbey from the amphitheatre end. It also means for a bit of fun, we have used every railway station along the line to Barrow for our walks this year and last.
Enjoy lunch overlooking the abbey before heading up to the right-hand side of the Abbey into Abbotswood to look at the remains of an old Victorian Mansion.
Retrace our steps to the abbey where you can go in and look round the grounds. From here we will follow the railway line using the same path as the last walk back to Dalton. If you are interested the volunteers of Dalton castle are very willing to open and give you a talk. Then we will walk to the station where we will catch the train home.
Abbey Amphitheatre – one of the notable features is the precinct wall, marks the limit of the main religious precinct. in the same sandstone as the Abbey. To gain entry beyond these walls required vigorous checks, not any old person was let in. In medieval times the floor of the amphitheatre would have been littered with various Abbey ancillary buildings including a brewery and bake house.
Victorian mansion – Abbots Wood house was built sometime in the 1850’s - 60’s for a Mr James Ramsden. He was allowed to live there at a rent of £205 a year from the railway company. He was a key player in the Furness railway which led to the rapid expansion of Barrow from a small fishing village to today. After his death the property had a few owners and was even used by the military during wartime. The property was demolished in the 1960’s, but the area was not left dormant as a large concrete structure appeared in the cold war years to act as a control centre in case of a nuclear war
