Walk Description:
Nordic Walking is a full-body outdoor fitness activity that enhances natural walking by using specially designed lightweight poles. Originating in Finland, it turns standard walking into a total-body workout that engages up to 90% of your skeletal muscles while being remarkably gentle on your joints.
What Makes Nordic Walking UniqueUnlike regular walking or basic hiking, Nordic Walking requires proper diagonal coordination (swinging the opposite arm and leg) and applying downward pressure into the ground to propel yourself forward. This upper body engagement:
Burns more calories: Uses 20% - 46% more energy than standard walking.·
Supports joint health: The poles distribute your body weight, drastically reducing impact on your knees and hips.·
Improves posture: It straightens the spine, engages the deep core muscles, and releases tension in the neck and shoulders.
Core TechniqueProper technique is key to unlocking the full benefits of Nordic Walking. The primary elements include: Natural Arm Swing: Arms swing straight from the shoulder with a relatively straight elbow.· Active Pole Planting: The poles are planted diagonally backwards, between the front and back foot.· Grip and Release: Hands are placed in fingerless "gloves" attached to the pole. You grip the handle as you push down and let go as your arm swings back.Stride Length: Taking slightly longer steps than normal, rolling through your entire foot from heel to toe
