Walking the Wandsyke Path Series from Morgans Hill to Marlborough - Part 1 - Morgans Hill to Knapp Hill - 7 miles.
Stretching for 35 miles through the countryside of Wiltshire and Somerset, The WANSDYKE is a large defensive earthwork was built some 20 to 120 years after the Romans had left Britain. Set to a east-to-west alignment, it is thought that whoever built the dyke was defending themselves against invaders from the north. No one knows for sure but more details here
S
So in this explorer series we are walking the whole East Wansdyke path from West to East starting at Morgans Hill near Devizes and ending in West Woods. This stretch is 11 miles long.
In Part 1 we start at Morgans Hill and walk along the Wansdyke via Furze Knoll to the Beckhampton to Devizes road where we cross over and continues along the earthwork to Tan Hill and then round the back of Milk Hill to end at Knapp Hill car park.
In Part 2 we start at Knapp Hill car park and walk along the ridge and then into West Woods.
You can join just this walk or continue with us to end at west woods for an 11 mile walk.
The Route: Starting at Morgans Hill we follow the Wansydke earth work right along the ridge to Tan Hill, Milk Hill and down to car park at base of Knapp Hill. This part has more hills but is a high ridge walk and will afford amazing views over the Marlborough Downs to the Ridgeway and then over towards Devizes and Calne.
