Walk Description:

Come with us on a 10km walk where we will have a look at Gorton Monastery.

When it was first built in 1866 it was surrounded by fields.  Slowly industry moved out of the centre as the canals and railways were nearby, it became a very industrial area, being given the nickname ‘ britains workshop’.

Gradually trying to upgrade it by building new houses and turning the canal towpath and disused track beds into cycle and walk paths, but the industrial past can still be seen. To complete a circular walk with have a look at the Ashton canal and Lower and Upper Gorton reservoirs.

Gorton Monastery – the church and friary of St Francis known locally as Gorton monastery is a grade II listed former Franciscan friary, designed by the architect Edward Pugin

Upper and Lower reservoirs – where built in the 1820’s to supply water to Manchester. They were the first municipal reservoirs in the country to provide fresh water to a growing cotton town.

Ashton canal – leaves the Rochdale canal in Manchester and links into the Huddersfield narrow canal. Is 7 miles and has 18 locks. Was built in 1792 to serve the coal industry around Oldham, Ashton and Hyde.
