Walk Description:

 

Come and join us for an 8km walk around the famous town of City of Chester. We will be walking along the Shropshire and Union Canal, River Dee, which takes us past the racecourse. 

Will also be looking at the roman ruins and St John the Baptist ruins which was the original abbey, after which we will walk along the walls, lastly looking in the magnificent cathedral. Taking the train, which is straight forward, packed lunch by the river Dee if the weather allows and cafe in the cathedral. 

Shropshire and Union canal – formed from the amalgamation of several companies including the Chester canal, Ellesmere canal and Birmingham and Liverpool Junction, canal, completed in 1835 quite late in the age of canals. 

River Dee – rises in Snowdonia and passes through lake Bala, Corwen and Llangollen, flows through Chester, discharges out to see via an estuary along the Wirral, you might have joined us on the Hilbre island walk, at the entrance to the estuary 

Chester Racecourse – also known as ‘the roodee, officially known as the oldest racecourse still in operation. Horse racing started in Chester in the early 16C, with 1539 cited as the year racing began. Also thought to be the smallest racecourse of significance in England at 1 mile and 1 furlong. 

St John the Baptist – was the cathedral and Collegiate church from 1075 until the reformation in 1541. The college was dissolved and the bishops seat transferred to the Abbey of St Werburgh, which was in better condition and had not suffered the same rigorous attention of the Kings Commissioner's 

Roman bath house – founded in 79AD was a massive 86m by 83m complex, featuring heated halls, baths and an exercise yard. 

Chester walls – are the oldest, longest and most complete Roman and medieval defensive walls in Britain, featuring a 2-mile circuit around the city centre 

Cathedral – St Werburgh. Has been a church of some type on this site since the 8th century, although human occupation of the space extends to the first century AD when it was part of the Roman fortress Legio XX Valera Victrix     

 

Walk speed guide:

Gentle stroll - Gear 1 - Nice pace that you can do for extended periods. 2-2.5mph (these generally are our Wellness walks)   Easy walk - Gear 2 - Faster pace gained through technique. Expect Gear 2 at times throughout the walk with occasional photo stops. 2.5mph (Most of our 1-hour Explorer walks)   Moderate walk - Gear 2/3 - Faster again using technique and with less recovery. Very little stopping. 2.5mph-3mph+ (these are generally Total Body Walx, but also explore this pace on our Explorer and Adventure walks)   Strenuous walk - gear 3/4  (these are generally Total Body Walx, but also explore this pace on our Explorer and Adventure walks).

You are asked to contact your WALX Guide by phone, leaving a voicemail or sending an sms text to the number listed below, if you are likely to be delayed as we do start classes promptly.

Whilst we do understand that sometimes it is not possible to make a class, please be aware that we do operate a no refund policy if you give us less than 2 hours’ notice.

On occasions it is necessary to make dynamic risk assessment decisions when there is a localised incident such as trees fallen en route, flooding, traffic changes, etc.
