Walk Description:

Join us for a fantastic two-hour walk through the beautiful woodland trails and bridle paths of Houghton Forest, before heading up onto the South Downs Way to explore either Bury Hill or Bignor Hill.

This is a hilly walk, with some good climbs to get the heart and lungs working. The reward is spectacular views across the South Downs and the opportunity to enjoy some of our most beautiful Sussex countryside.

The route includes woodland trails, chalk paths and uneven terrain, which can become muddy and slippery after rain. Please wear sturdy walking shoes or boots with good grip.

We can accommodate different walking speeds while keeping the group together, with opportunities for faster walkers to stretch themselves and work a little harder along the way. However, you should be comfortable walking for two hours and tackling some challenging hills.

This is a great walk if you want to build your fitness, improve your hill walking and enjoy a good workout in the fresh air, all while enjoying the company of a friendly group.

New to WALX Coast and Country? Please contact Denise for a chat before booking so we can make sure this walk is suitable for your current fitness and walking experience.

Walking Levels Explained

Easy – Up to 2.5 to 3 mph

Ideal for casual walkers who enjoy conversation along the way. These walks are mostly flat, and any hills will be tackled slowly and gently.

Moderate – 3 to 3.5 mph

A steady pace that may lead to slightly heavier breathing, particularly on inclines. Suitable for those looking for a bit more of a workout.

Challenging – 3.5 to 4 mph

Suited for experienced walkers who enjoy pushing their pace. These walks may include longer durations (2+ hours), steeper inclines/declines, or uneven terrain. Though challenging, there will be moments to catch your breath, usually on flat or downhill sections.

Note: We never leave anyone behind. The walk leader makes sure everyone is looked after.
