Your Base

Dolgellau

Dolgellau (pronounced Dol-geth-lie) is a picturesque market town set beneath the southern flanks of Cadair Idris, one of Wales’ most iconic mountains. Surrounded by some of Snowdonia’s finest walking country, it’s ideally placed between mountain and sea — giving easy access to the hills. The town features cafés, pubs, local shops, and a welcoming atmosphere. The town sits within Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and is known for its distinctive stone buildings, historic bridges, and winding lanes. Once a centre of the Welsh woollen and gold-mining trades, today Dolgellau has a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere, blending local heritage with outdoor adventure.

Itinerary

South Snowdonia: Peaks, Lakes & Wild Horizons

This South Snowdonia adventure reveals the region’s diverse landscapes — from moorland ridges and rocky summits to tranquil lakes and sweeping coastal views. Day 1 (Fri, 3rd) begins with arrival, orientation, and a group dinner. Day 2 (Sat, 4th) explores the quiet Tarren Hills, summiting Tarrenhendre and Tarren y Gesail (18 km) for wide views over Cardigan Bay and the Dyfi Estuary. Day 3 (Sun, 5th) features the solitary peak of Arenig Fawr (845 m, 13 km), a steady climb with panoramic vistas across Snowdonia and beyond. Day 4 (Mon, 6th) ventures into the rugged Rhinogau, traversing Rhinog Fach (712 m) and circling the shimmering Llyn Hywel on a demanding but spectacular route. Day 5 (Tue, 7th) offers a quieter hike in the Aran range to Glasgwm (779 m) and Waun Camddwr (621 m), with far-reaching views and a gentler pace. The trip concludes on Day 6 (Wed, 8th) with breakfast and farewells before travelling home.

Mountain Trails

Expect a mix of well-defined mountain paths, rough moorland, rocky ascents, and occasional short scrambly sections on peaks.

Terrain and Fitness

What do you need to know?

This trip is graded Moderate–Strenuous (4/5) overall. Expect a mix of well-defined mountain paths, rough moorland, rocky ascents, and occasional short scrambly sections on peaks like Rhinog Fach. Some routes include pathless ground, peat hags, or boulder-strewn ridges typical of the Rhinogs and Arans. Daily outings will usually last 6-7 hours, covering 10–18 km with up to 900 m of ascent on the bigger days. The walking is steady but requires good general fitness, stamina, and sure-footedness on uneven ground. While no technical climbing is involved, this is true mountain terrain, remote, exposed in places, and often rough underfoot. Participants should be confident hiking for a full day in varied weather and comfortable carrying their own kit, food, and water.
