Jamie McAnsh is a an inspirational man who tackled a sudden paralysis head on. He woke one morning in 2014 to find his legs did not work due to a complex condition known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) following a bout of shingles. Jamie faced life in a wheelchair but his determination to overcome limitations led him to excel in several wheelchair sports, reaching regional success in Basketball, playing squash at Masters level and representing Wales in Wheelchair rugby.
Jamie did not stop at those two sports though as he put his positive mindset into conquering events such as the Carten 100 which he handcycled as part of the South Wales cycling team and reaching Mt Everest base camp which he did using adapted crutches.
Now Jamie shares his story and gives motivational talks as he inspires people with his belief that the power of perseverance and resilience can help people rise above adversity. He also delivers workshops that promote accessibility and inclusivity whilst supporting many charitable initiatives raising huge amounts.
WALX first came across Jamie when he noticed our poles and was intrigued by the 15 degree shaft angle which he felt could really help his next challenge which was to climb KILIMANJARO!
Of course, we were more than happy to help and watched with interest as he succeeded (of course) He reached the 5,895 metre summit following and 8 day trek (in which 4 of the team had to withdraw) – wearing composite Carbon fibre legs called SpryStep KAFOs (Knee, Ankle, Foot Orthoses) made especially for the terrain by the pioneering orthotics firm and sponsor Thuasne UK and supported by WALX poles!!
Now he has set his sights on Everest again and we will delighted to provide him and his team the poles they need. We were keen to get his feedback and are already making adaptations to ensure both he an other disabled adventurers are able to gain the comfortable support they need – wherever they may be walking!
