OK we don’t usually like to call them sticks but in this instance it works! Using poles, as we prefer to call them, can dramatically enhance any walk – literally turning it into a workout, so read on to find out how to STICK to your resolution this year with our 5 handy tips…………
Every New year, people make bold statements about what they are going to change but in reality the best way to change habits is to never aim to high and to have fun. Doing something that is natural, effective, affordable is the best way to start.
Tip one – Always choose bitesize goals. If you do not walk much but want to start, set yourself short walks of 30 minutes or less and build it up. If are a walker, try to add some oomph to every walk rather than going further or staying out longer – time is precious and our motto is ‘make walking work’ Use poles, add some strength exercises or some bursts of brisker paced walking.
Tip two – Aim for results. Its a known fact that if you don’t see or feel the benefits from doing something, you will soon decide the time you dedicated to it was wasted. SO, pick up some poles to make sure you work 90% of your muscles, improve posture, burn extra calories and best of all ….feel lighter on your feet. You will see a difference really quickly and experience improved mood and energy levels after the first outing.
Tip three – don’t go it alone. You are far more likely to stick to something if you do it with somebody else. Arrange to meet up with a walking buddy and you are less likely to back out at the last minute. Better still, join a group where you will soon feel you are missing out if you don’t go! The benefits of exercising with others are huge, it helps with motivation and makes the experience enjoyable – the time will fly as you chat and laugh with others. Our groups are all led by experienced, qualified Instructors too so they can teach you to use poles for maximum benefits, provide additional advice and motivate you through the highs and lows. A POWER OF POLES introductory session will take only 90 minutes but will change your Life!
Tip four – be Positive and go easy on yourself. If you miss a session don’t beat yourself up but be careful not to allow that to break the habit and lead to giving up altogether. Always tell yourself that it’s OK to miss one walk or workout but reflect on how that makes you feel against how good you feel when you do make the right choices. If the weather puts you off, remember that if you join a group and pay via the low cost monthly Direct Debit option, you can also enjoy on line workouts with the WALX HQ expert team for no extra charge! Tip five – let nature work it’s magic! The best part about walking with poles (sticks) is that it can be done anywhere by anybody and it is OUTDOORS. Fresh air and nature are natural healers, known to boost mood and add to the feel good factor of exercise. So if you invest in a pair of poles, you are effectively joining the best gym in the world where every workout takes you to a new place. No more staring at a sweaty you in a mirror and breathing other peoples germs, just a new view and a NEW YOU!
