Hope you’re all well and keeping safe.

It’s great to have got the first month under our belt after Lockdown 3.0 and we have been out for some very enjoyable walks. It has been lovely to catch up with familiar faces, meeting back up with those who gained their Freedom Passports just before Christmas and meeting new people who are just starting their WALX on The Chase journey. Our schedule of walks is similar to those before suspending and we have been thinking of ways that we can encourage more people to join us and also help those who have found it difficult getting out over the last 12 months.

Recovering from the Pandemic

For those who have suffered from COVID-19 and recovered, there are lasting effects whether they are diagnosed with Long COVID or not. These can involve fatigue and breathlessness. In addition, a high number of people have been shielding on and off for over 12 months and many now feel anxious about getting out and/or meeting people. We are happy to try and help everyone to enjoy the feeling of being outdoors, exercising and having a chat so have introduced some COVID-19 Recovery walks. They last around about 30 minutes and are designed to help with exercise and mobility, taking place within sight of their vehicles to reduce any anxiety. We will work with anyone wishing to walk themselves fitter.

The next level is to attend one of our Wellness WALX. These are up to 1 hour walking with or without poles and/or a Freedom Passport and they will include some mobility and flexibility exercises. The walk is designed to make use of the flat areas of Cannock Chase so there will not be any challenging hills, we can try them in week 2 LOL.

This Easter we added a WALX twist creating our first-ever virtual easter egg hunt! Thank you to everyone for interacting, we hope you all enjoyed it. If you would like to see similar events in the future, please let us know.

A special thank you to Ruth for getting involved in our Tuesday Testimonial series; go check it out on our website/social media. If you would like to get involved, please email us at, we would love to hear from you! Freedom Passports Congratulations to Nigel, Robyn, Anne, Anne, Phil, Karen and Gillian for gaining their Freedom Passports during April. We would also like to welcome Colin, who has been Nordic Walking for several years and has now joined us on Cannock Chase. These are the last physical passports we will be issuing due to our move to more digitisation and reducing our use of paper and cardboard.

Bring a Friend for Free

We have had some members tell us that they have friends who would love to try Nordic Walking but are anxious about attending on their own. For this reason, we have added some open walks where anyone who is enjoying Nordic Walking can bring along a friend to a special session and walk together whilst the friend receives some basic instruction. If you know anyone who would like to try, please get them to register and complete the Health Assessment and we can then get them registered for a walk.

Purbeck Festival

The Purbeck WALX festival (formally the Purbeck Nordic Walking Festival) in Dorset will enter its fifth year in 2021, sadly missing 2020 due to the pandemic. You can join in on the 17th 18th and 19th September 2021 for a bigger and better event!

Explore this stunning area on the Jurassic coast and take part in walks in iconic locations like Brownsea Island, Thomas Hardy’s cottage and Old Harry Rocks. We have hundreds of walks for all levels, with or without poles. All led by trained leaders and all with an essence of adventure, food or fun (or perhaps all 3!). This 3-day event includes two distance challenges (16 and 27 miles) and a Saturday night social with live music at our unique Festival hub nestled beneath Corfe Castle. Please use the following link to find out more

On 18th September we will be joining in on the 16-mile challenge virtually using Cannock Chase. We are currently working with other WALX instructors to put a training plan in place so that you can be fit enough to take on the challenge too if you feel up to it. It is £15.00 to enter and more details can be found here Please get in touch if you want more information or would like to join us on the training or the 16-mile walk itself.

Social Media

Many of you know that we have been working with two final year marketing students from Birmingham City University. They have brought a wealth of initiatives to us and managed most of our social media platforms over the last 7 months. We have been meeting weekly (virtually) to discuss ideas and progress and they really have made a difference. If you have anything that you would like to share with us about Cannock Chase or walking with us, please do. In addition, if you are ever out and about and take any photographs that you share on social media, please tag us in the post. These channels are helping us to spread the word about the benefits of WALX on The Chase.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Safety Briefing

I attended a safety briefing with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service along with other parties interested in keeping Cannock Chase safe for everyone. The focus was on water and fire safety, but also included information on litter and fly-tipping. We will be keeping an eye out for anything that causes harm to the beautiful surroundings we walk in. If you see any fire please call 999 immediately.

Great speaking to Jason on 616 The Milk Bar Podcast discussing all things WALX on The Chase. Give it a watch on any of our social media platforms and leave a comment with your thoughts.

Walk of the Month

We’re excited to announce the beginning of a new series ‘Walk of The Month’ celebrating a special walk from each month. April’s Walk of The Month was the sunset walk on Monday 19th. This walk had everything: beautiful views, great company and lovely weather; what more can you ask for? Check it out on our social media and website and let us know what your favourite walk of the month was!

Hope to see you all on the Chase soon,

WALX on The Chase
