How to Start Nordic Walking with Confidence

Why Every Walx White Peak Journey Begins with Power of Poles

Learning to use the poles is not about passing a test. It is about giving yourself the confidence to enjoy every walk that follows.

“Do I really need a Power of Poles session?”

It is one of the questions we are asked most often, usually by someone who is keen to join a walk but wonders whether they could simply come along and learn as they go.

It is a perfectly reasonable question. Walking is something most of us have done all our lives, and at first glance Nordic Walking can look like ordinary walking with a pair of poles added.

The good news is that learning Nordic Walking is not difficult. But learning the right foundations at the beginning makes the whole experience more comfortable, more effective and much more enjoyable.

That is why every new Nordic Walker at Walx White Peak begins with a Power of Poles session. It is not a barrier that stands between you and our walks. It is the best first step into them.

Think of it as your welcome, not your lesson

The name Power of Poles can sound more formal than the session feels. In reality, it is a relaxed and friendly introduction designed for complete beginners.

There is no test, no exam and no expectation that you will arrive knowing what to do. Nobody is judging your coordination or marking your performance. We simply take the time to show you how the poles work and help you discover a comfortable, natural rhythm.

You will be able to ask questions, practise at your own pace and get used to the equipment without worrying about holding up a regular group walk.

For many people, the most important outcome is not technical perfection. It is the quiet realisation that says:

“I can do this.”

Why we do not simply teach as we walk

People sometimes ask why they cannot join a normal Nordic Walking session and pick up the technique along the way. There are several good reasons.

First, it is difficult to enjoy the countryside when you are trying to think about every movement at once. A regular walk should feel like a walk, not a lesson that keeps stopping and starting.

Second, the rest of the group has come to enjoy the route, the company and the rhythm of walking together. Teaching a complete beginner during that session would not give you the attention you deserve, and it would change the experience for everyone else.

Most importantly, Power of Poles gives you space to learn without pressure. By the time you join your first regular walk, the poles will already feel more familiar and you will be free to look up, enjoy the views and begin getting to know the people around you.

What you will actually learn

Power of Poles is not about filling your head with technical information. It is about giving you practical skills that work in the real countryside, not just on a flat path.
  • how to hold and use the poles comfortably and naturally
  • how the wrist straps work and how they support good technique
  • how to develop a smooth, relaxed Nordic Walking rhythm
  • how to walk at different paces while improving your Posture, Purpose and Performance
  • how to use the poles effectively when walking uphill
  • how to use the poles with control and confidence when walking downhill
  • how to navigate gates, stiles and other countryside features safely
  • how to adapt your movement for different surfaces and terrain
  • how to feel ready to join one of our regular Nordic Walking groups
You will have plenty of opportunities to practise as you go, and there will always be time to ask questions. Nobody expects you to remember everything straight away.

Like any new skill, Nordic Walking becomes easier each time you use it. Our aim is not to create a perfect Nordic Walker in one session. It is to help you begin safely, understand the foundations and feel confident enough to enjoy what comes next.

Posture, Purpose and Performance

During Power of Poles, we often talk about three simple ideas: Posture, Purpose and Performance.

Good posture helps you walk tall, breathe freely and move with greater ease. Purpose means using the poles actively rather than simply carrying them or placing them lightly on the ground. Performance is not about speed or competition. It is about getting more from your walking, whatever your own starting point may be.

For one person, improved performance might mean walking uphill with more confidence. For someone else, it may mean keeping a steadier rhythm, feeling more balanced or finishing a walk with less fatigue.

The three ideas belong together. Better posture helps you use the poles with purpose, and purposeful technique helps your walking feel stronger and more effective.

Learning for the countryside we actually walk in

Walx White Peak walks take place across the Derbyshire Dales, the southern Peak District and the Staffordshire Moorlands. Our routes are varied, and that is part of their appeal.

You may encounter gentle tracks, grassy paths, woodland, slopes, gates, stiles and uneven ground. That is why we believe a useful beginner session should prepare you for more than walking up and down a flat stretch of pavement.

Power of Poles helps you understand how to adjust what you are doing when the terrain changes. The aim is not to remove every challenge from the countryside. It is to help you approach those challenges with more confidence and a better understanding of how the poles can support you.

A shared starting point

One of the reasons our regular walks feel so relaxed is that everyone has begun with the same basic foundations.

Each person remembers what it was like to hold the poles for the first time. They remember thinking about their hands, their feet and whether they were doing everything correctly. They also remember how quickly those early worries began to fade.

That shared experience helps create a welcoming group. New members are not treated like outsiders who need to catch up. They are simply the next person beginning a journey that everyone else has already started.

It also means we can use familiar reminders during our walks. A small prompt about posture or pole position makes sense because everyone has been introduced to the same foundations.

It is amazing how quickly confidence grows

We have introduced many people who arrived saying they were not coordinated, had never tried anything similar or were worried they would be the only person who could not get the hang of it.

Usually, the change begins within the session. The movement becomes less deliberate. The poles start to work with the natural rhythm of the arms. The person who was concentrating intensely begins to relax, look around and smile.

They have not become an expert in an hour or two. They have simply discovered that Nordic Walking is something they can learn.

That matters because confidence often grows before fitness does. Once someone feels comfortable enough to come back, the real benefits can begin to build through regular walking.

More than learning technique

Power of Poles is also your introduction to Walx White Peak.

It gives you the chance to meet us, experience our teaching style and discover that the atmosphere is friendly rather than intimidating. You can ask about our different walks, discuss any concerns and find out which sessions may suit you best.

Some people arrive focused entirely on learning how to use the poles. By the end, they are also asking when they can walk again and which group they should try first.

That change tells us the session has done its job. The equipment is no longer the biggest thing on their mind. They are beginning to imagine themselves as part of the group.

Why we believe this first step matters

At Walx White Peak, we believe enjoyment creates consistency, and consistency creates change.

People are much more likely to continue when the beginning feels manageable and positive. When they understand what they are doing, they can relax. When they relax, they are more likely to enjoy themselves. When they enjoy themselves, they want to return.

Over time, those regular walks can improve fitness, confidence, wellbeing and connection with other people. But it all begins with making the first experience feel achievable.

Power of Poles is not designed to teach you everything there is to know about Nordic Walking. It is designed to give you enough confidence to enjoy your first walk - and enough encouragement to look forward to your second.

The Walx White Peak perspective

We do not rush people through Power of Poles simply so they can be added to a regular walk. We want you to understand the basics, feel comfortable and know that you can ask for help whenever you need it.

Nor do we expect your technique to be perfect after one session. Learning continues naturally as you walk more often. We will keep offering small reminders and encouragement, helping you refine your movement without making every walk feel like a lesson.

Our role is to give you a strong beginning and then walk alongside you as your confidence grows.

The moment we enjoy most is not when someone performs every movement perfectly. It is when they stop worrying, begin enjoying themselves and realise that they belong.

What happens after Power of Poles?

Once you have completed the session, you will be ready to join our regular Nordic Walking programme.

We will help you choose a suitable first walk based on your current confidence, fitness and interests. You may prefer a shorter, gentler session to begin with, or you may already feel ready for one of our Explorer WALX.

Whichever session you choose, you will arrive knowing the basic technique, understanding how the poles are used and recognising at least one familiar face.

From there, every walk gives you another opportunity to practise. The movement becomes more natural, the countryside becomes more enjoyable and the people around you begin to feel less like a group you have joined and more like a community you are part of.

Frequently asked questions

Is Power of Poles difficult?

No. It is designed for complete beginners and is taught at a comfortable pace. We explain each part clearly and give you time to practise.

Do I need to own poles?

No. We provide suitable Nordic Walking poles for the session, so there is no need to buy anything beforehand.

What if I do not understand the technique straight away?

That is completely normal. The session gives you the foundations, and your technique will continue to develop naturally on future walks.

Is it a fitness test?

Not at all. Power of Poles is an introduction, not an assessment. You do not need to prove your fitness or keep up with anyone else.

Will I learn how to use poles on hills?

Yes. We include techniques for walking uphill and downhill, as well as adapting to changing pace, surfaces and countryside features.

What if I have questions or concerns?

Please ask. The session is the ideal time to discuss anything that may affect your walking and to find out which regular sessions are likely to suit you best.

Your next step

If you have been thinking about Nordic Walking but are worried that you will not know what to do, Power of Poles is there to remove that worry.

You do not need experience. You do not need to be particularly fit. You do not need to practise before you arrive.

You only need to be willing to try.

We will provide the poles, teach you the foundations and help you take your first steps with confidence. From there, the countryside, the companionship and the enjoyment of regular walking are waiting for you.

We would be delighted to welcome you.
