Role: WALX in Bexley coordinator
I had just started my role as the Health Walks co-ordinator at Bexley Council in 2012 when I was asked to co-ordinate the project along with the Walking for Health Scheme. In February and March 2013 I headed to Hampstead Heath and completed my training. In July I ran a pilot and in September I had my first 12 people sign up.
I have been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. I enjoy encouraging people to become more active and improve their daily life through exercise. Along with my Nordic Walking I have a varied background in fitness including exercise referrals, cardiac rehabilitation, exercise for the elderly and Pilates. Committing to an outdoor activity means that you must like the great outdoors and so long as we can get there, we are at the meeting point whatever the weather!

I learnt to Nordic Walk back when Helen started Nordic Walking in Bexley in 2013 and began training as a volunteer walk leader soon after. It was a perfect exercise for me and I enjoyed the outdoors and socialising with others on each walk. In 2014, I trained to become a Nordic Walking Instructor and began working alongside Helen in running and delivering Tasters, PoP, Nordic Walx, Yoga Walx and Walx with Chiball. I thoroughly enjoy walking and have improved my own fitness level as well as many others. Nordic walking is a whole-body exercise and can be done in any weather!! It is a great way to get outdoors, enjoy your local parks and get fitter at the same time.

Many years ago I started looking for a way of improving my fitness and help with a busy, stressful, office based job. I was keen to find something that would get me outside to
enjoy the countryside and meet a few like minded people! I had a look at the local council website and that brought me to Nordic Walking. It looked to be just what I needed! I
signed up straight away and from the taster session I loved it and knew this was for me. I met some inspirational instructors who encouraged me and supported my journey to fitness.
Since then, I have met some lovely people and got to know my local area so much better. I have seen the improvement Nordic Walking has brought to the health and fitness of my friends and clients and has made such a difference to their emotional and mental well being.
I really enjoy teaching technique and helping people improve their fitness in a fun and engaging way . Nordic Walking provides a really good way for you to get healthy at your own pace
and improve your fitness when you’re ready.

I learnt to Nordic Walk back when my sister started Nordic Walking in Bexley. Whilst I couldn’t attend regularly due to working full-time in an Admin post, and walks were scheduled initially during my working hours, I would often join classes on my days off until I was invited to Sardinia for a Nordic Walking mini-break and my interest and regular attendance picked up from there. A later walk added to Saturday mornings meant I could first walk my dogs and then walk myself!
As numbers grew, I became a volunteer walk leader and then in 2018 trained as an Instructor and now help to deliver Tasters and Power of Pole sessions alongside leading walks and other activities for WALX in Bexley.
