Shropshire Hills - Winter

Church Stretton sits between the heather-covered Long Mynd to the west and the striking summits of Caer Caradoc and Hope Bowdler Hill to the east. Rolling farmland, wooded valleys and open ridges make this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty a wonderfully varied base for a late-winter walking break. Our accommodation choices are both in Church Stretton, placing us close to the town and within easy reach of the surrounding hills. The itinerary remains deliberately flexible so the group can enjoy rewarding walking while responding safely to weather, wind and ground conditions.

Chruch Stretton

Church Stretton is a charming market town nestled among the Shropshire Hills, offering welcoming cafés, traditional pubs and direct access to the Long Mynd and surrounding valleys. It’s the perfect base for a winter walking escape.

Church Stretton

Your Base

On a clear day the higher ground opens out to far-reaching views towards Wales, the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons and the Malvern Hills.

Terrain and Fitness

Winter conditions

We grade this trip as moderate, with some ascents and descents but not severe and with a good level of walking fitness most people will cope with sections that may feel difficult in winter conditions. You should be comfortable walking for approximately 5-7 hours a day over uneven hill terrain and have a reasonable level of fitness.

· Open moorland, broad ridges, farmland, woodland tracks and valley paths.

· Rough grass, heather, mud, stone steps and short, steeper climbs.

· Possible ice, frost, snow, strong wind and reduced visibility.

· Routes may be shortened, lowered or changed for safety and enjoyment.
