Power of Poles intro course

Find out how to use fitness walking poles to achieve the results YOU want. This course will help you understand how to select the right kind of poles and use them for health, fitness, fun or challenges.

This course will ensure you get the correct movement and techniques from the start. Whilst we do provide poles for tuition sessions these are thoroughly cleaned before and after use. At the moment Poles used for tuition are strapless.

After this course you will receive the Freedom Passport to book walks with all NWUK instructors.

A progression to an optional Part 2 of the course gives you the opportunity to explore how to get more out of using Nordic style strapped poles with drills and advanced technique tuition.

"Thank you for the course on thursday I really enjoyed the afternoon , and am looking forward to being in the walks. It was all very informative and you also made it enjoyable . See you on thursday I only ached a little bit the next day."

"I found the handles comfortable with good grip and ledge hand rest. The poles felt stable, I walk with carbon poles and expected these to feel a lot heavier, but I adapted to them quickly and this wasn’t an issue. On top of each handle is a clear image of L and R so no confusion which pole in what hand. The feet are sturdy like mini black boots, easy to remove.

I would prefer this style to use over rugged and hilly terrain, especially climbing over styles as no unclipping and re clipping of straps, I can also see the benefit of this style for people who suffer from joint problems in the hands and wrists as straps can aggravate some conditions. 

For me personally I think they would have helped me post op and through the learning process of walking again because of there stability, I felt more grounded. I certainly felt that I had completed a good work out and waited until the following morning to see how my body had reacted. The benefit for me was I felt it had worked the core area, when walking with my carbon poles I am conscious of mentally and physically pulling my core muscles in, with the urban poles I noticed without thinking I could feel it happening, and certainly felt it next day.My upper arm also had a stronger workout, this was soaked away by a much needed shower.

These are brilliant poles as it gives everyone an opportunity to walk and feel able, to join in."

You will experience the joy of walking with poles as it is less stressful on the joints, it makes you walk faster with very little extra effort, it works your upper body as well as the legs. Walk Description:

Our Virtual sessions are online, helping you stay active and mobile from home. These sessions are designed to fit easily into your day. Run by NWUK Instructor, Susan Spain.

Join Susan to help you wind down on a Wednesday evening with the 8 move Tai Chi Movements for Wellbeing (TMW) sequence and some gentle movement and relaxation . This is a specially created sequence of movements which promotes physical and mental wellbeing. With origins in both Tai Chi and Chi Kung, the TMW sequence fuses elements of these arts into a simplified form. It can be practised both seated and standing too, whichever suits you best. This session lasts a maximum of 40 mins. 

There is a £4 fee for Pay as You Go members Class is free for Parks and Pathways NW direct debit members. 

Make sure you keep the booking email. Your booking confirmation email contains the link to the new WALX/NWUK Virtual sessions Log in Page. When you click through you log in with the same login and password as your NWUK/WALX account. When logged in you will see your booked session and simply click on the join button by the booked session. If your device or internet browser doesn`t support the new platform you will be invited to click and join via Zoom.  

Join the session from 7.55pm for a prompt start at 8pm. Make sure you unmute yourself and enable video when you log in so you can see and hear me. Please have a sturdy chair available too.

These WALX make every step count! Total Body walking™ is a unique mix of drills and strength and balance exercises.

We prefer to walk with poles as it is more effective than ordinary walking .When poles are used we are able to engage the upper body, core muscles, improve posture and burn more calories. 

It is essential to register and book in advance online. We are adhereing to strict Covid-19 social distancing protocol. Please use your own poles and equipment. Please do not book on for for a small group  WALX if you think you may have symptons, or do have symptons or have been in contact with some one who has symptons. Thank you for your undertanding.

This is for members with a Nordic Walking UK FREEDOM passport 

. Please  bring with you a mask, hand gel/ wipes, and  a pair of disposable gloves in a small rucsac with your drink and any medication you may neeed.

Walk Description:

This walk starts in the free car park to the right-hand side of the Three Locks public house. We walk the first 1.3 km, along the tranquil tow path where various wildlife can be seen. We then turn right and head north on a bridle path walking up through fields and farm buildings as we ascend on a gentle uphill slope. We then walk a section of road and turn left up into Rushmere Country Park, walking along bridleways on the Greensands public footpath, which takes the walk through woods. We pass by tranquil fishing lakes and  end up back on the canal to our finish point at the Three Locks public house. This walk is suitable for those who can Adventure Walk but could be too strenuous for those new to Nordic Walking. It is a good 9.5 Km (6 miles) and can be extended.
